18 Best Dressed Celebrities at the 2018 Grammys

1. BEST ENTRANCE: LADY GAGA IN ARMANI

Gaga was second to perform, and appeared very quickly after opener Kendrick Lamar, so it made sense that she was just about the first person on the red carpet: She had to get this Armani some quality promenading time before she changed into her angel outfit. Mission accomplished. This was one of the highest-impact outfits of the night, and one the telecasts turned to again and again for its glamorous B-roll — proving yet again that she’s among the best at making the world her stage.

2. BEST JOLT: JANELLE MONAE IN DOLCE & GABBANA

Janelle has us conditioned to expect her in black, black and white, or either of those with a touch of red. So it was a delicious swerve to see her showing up in this D&G tux that’s erupting in flowers — and yet still, somehow, so wholly her. If you don’t yet think styling is an art, you’d best start.

3. BEST ACCENT: HAILEE STEINFELD IN ALEXANDRE VAUTHIER

we were so confused why Hailee would pick Grammy night of ALL nights to go so simple. We needn’t have furrowed: The full shot revealed those glitzy purple boots, which instantly elevated this entire look into excellence. And, not for nothing, made us think of Prince. It’s never a bad time to invoke his memory.

4. BEST HIGH-LOW: INDIA.ARIE

Doubtless the shirt and miniskirt themselves would be a perfectly cute outfit on their own, but that resplendent matching duster elevates this into something indelible. She’d better not take it off at the after-parties; it’s perfect for making a dramatic entrance.

5. BEST GOLDEN GIRL: KELLY CLARKSON IN CHRISTIAN SIRIANO

Kelly’s inner light can illuminate pretty much anything, but this year she’s had Christian Siriano cloaking it lovingly in custom black-and-gold, which has made her shine even more brightly.

6. BEST FROOF: PINK IN ARMANI

THIS is what the Grammys are about: big and bright and bold and a touch impractical, and probably not that easy to sit in without worrying about crushing something. And because Pink performed a stripped-down anthem in a white t-shirt and jeans, this was doubly impactful.

7. BEST SUIT-DRESS: ANDRA DAY

Okay, so that slit may need to come with a warning label, but let’s assume Andra has it taped to within a quarter-inch of its life (and her crotch). Because all-told, this is GLORIOUS

8. BEST SEXY SUIT: EVE IN NAEEM KHAN

Oh, Naeem, we’ve missed you this awards season. This fab suit is an impeccable way to make your grand return.

9. BEST SLOUCHY SUIT: ALESSIA CARA

Alessia Cara is clearly a woman who wants to look and feel like herself. And this cool suit, paired with a classic white tee, is totally authentic to the vibe she’s always created even as it represents another small step toward stuff that’s a bit slicker. She also took home Best New Artist, so it seems we’ll be seeing a lot more of her evolution. We can’t wait.

10. BEST LEGEND: REBA MCINTYRE

Reba, you gleaming, glittering, gorgeous ginger, you. We would say “never change,” but truly, you never seem to, and that’s as it should be. (And for the soap-opera-loving kids who missed her the first time, Google the video for “Does He Love You.” Reba is life.)

11. BEST RED CARPET RED: CAMILA CABELLO IN VIVIENNE WESTWOOD

Technically speaking, hardly anyone wore red on the Grammys red carpet — but even if they had, we’d be giving Camila props for this. Her album’s on fire; dressing to match was a very good call.

12. BEST MATERNITY LOOK: CHRISSY TEIGEN IN YANINA COUTURE

This sparkly confection would be good even if Chrissy weren’t dressing for two. But it’s all the more impressive given that we’re pretty sure she’d rather be home gestating in her sweatpants.

13. BEST RETURN TO THE AWARDS SHOW CIRCUIT: MILEY CYRUS IN JEAN-PAUL GAULTIER

Miley hashtagged her tweet about the Grammys red carpet “#thebitchisback,” and we’d add “#andbetterthanever.” Her black jumpsuit is elegant, understated, and, yes, perfect for throwing a drink in someone’s face. You know, if she needs to. Is it wrong to hope she does?

14. BEST GRAMMYS DEBUT: CARDI B IN ASHI STUDIO

Miley’s umpteenth go-round was refreshingly understated, but this was Cardi’s first, so it’s thrilling that she didn’t phone it in: This is a lot of dress, and it makes a big splash, but no less than she herself has made on the music scene. You earned this, Cardi. Swim in it.

15. BEST EYEWEAR, STANDARD DIVISION: LISA LOEB IN ZEINA NABULSI

Lisa’s frock is great, don’t get us wrong. But we really love seeing her trademark glasses, which are as charming now as they were when we first fell in love with them, um, mumblesomething years ago. Excuse us, we’ve got to make an appointment with our optometrists.

16. BEST EYEWEAR, EXTREMELY EXTRA DIVISION: ELTON JOHN

Sir Elton just announced his retirement in … well, 300 concerts from now, but still. We must pay tribute to a man who, his entire career, has known that the best way to accessorize a sparkly jacket is with yet more sparkles.

17. BEST RAINCOAT: RIHANNA IN ALEXANDRE VAUTHIER

Okay, so Rihanna didn’t technically walk the red carpet, but we couldn’t resist including her. This oxblood patent leather coat/dress is too rad to keep to ourselves. We would get lost in all that, but as ever, she makes it look enviably easy.

18. BEST OLD HOLLYWOOD SHOUT-OUT: LANA DEL REY IN GUCCI

Lana Del Ray Twitter was quick to point out her resemblance to a very famous look of Hedy Lamarr’s — and not only does Lana look great, it feels like it’s exactly the right time to remind everyone that Lamarr was a tremendous beauty who also invented spread spectrum technology to help thwart the Nazis, which is basically the reason any of us have WiFi. Women contain multitudes, and where would the world be without us? Nowhere good.
