Today on Be Inspired we get to know more about the ladies behind BK Fashion Mavens
Q: Hi bk fashion mavens can you please start by telling us about yourselves and what you do please?
Ans: Together, Lauren and Merlyn Are the creators of BK fashion Mavens and we couldn’t have this page without the fashionistas who consistently show #Brooklyn Love.
We’ve been friends since high school and also attended Penn State as roommates all 4 years.
Merlyn is 25 and has a fashion/Beauty background. Currently works as the Community Manager for Revlon.
Lauren is also 25, she studied political science but is now working in finance as an asset manager associate for a private wealth management firm
Q: What inspired you to start bk fashion mavens?
Ans: Well we always talk about the bloggers we love and wanted to get a piece of this “blogger” life. We also knew we had to have a niche and create a way to differentiate ourselves from this somewhat “over saturated” community. One thing we always notice about bloggers in NYC is the same Manhattan locations and hardly any of the other boroughs, including Brooklyn. So all of our photo shoots are in Brooklyn and we feature the fashionistas who also love the borough.
Q: You have some great photos on your instagram, how do you ladies decide on what outfit to wear and location to shoot?
Ans: We usually would plan around a theme or holiday coming up. If not, it’s based on the neighborhood. We always scout the location and then decide what type of outfits would go best. Nethertheless, sometimes it comes down to what is the most recent thing we bought in our closet.
Q: What are your personal styles like?
Ans: Merlyn- My style switches up a lot however the #1 thing that stays consistent in all my fits is “comfort” and I always try to be out the box. I would describe the style I “Urban-posh” I love boyfriend/mom jeans, oversized shirts and sneakers/booties most of the time but slaying in a body-con dress is fun too lol
Lauren— I love trying to find things I wouldn’t normally pick up. As I get older I find myself experimenting and thinking out of the box more. I’ve been told my style is “polished with edge and flare” but I generally buy whatever I like. I absolutely love mom jeans, that’s always my go to item and I can never seem to get away from stripes.
Q: What’s a must have item that fashion conscious girls in brooklyn love at the moment?
Ans: Merlyn- I would say mom jeans or cropped puffer jackets
Lauren— I would agree mom jeans are a fav. Also, Barrett’s and a cute set of 90s sunnies.
Q: Best photographer you ladies have worked with so far?
Ans: Our go-to photographer is Edward. He was our first professional photographer and he never disappoints.
Q: Who is your fashion inspiration and why?
Ans: Merlyn- It has to be a mix of Rihanna, SZA and Nichole Lynel. They all represent my mix of styles.
Lauren— I love June Ambrose because she’s always so daring with her outfits. I also love her history in the industry as a stylist.
We both like @alealimay because she’s always rocking the latest trend in her own way. She’s always so cool and calm with her outfits by the way she wears them confidently. #Boss
Q: When you pass a clothes shop how much time do you usually spend looking at the clothes?
Ans: Takes about 1-2 hours to shop which includes scouting then trying on clothes and then making final decisions.
Q: What are the trends you loving this season?
Ans: As far as Winter, i am loving faux fur coats, berets and graphic sweatshirts. We also love puffer jackets and the extra long belt trend.
Q: How do you retain followers and get them to interact?
Ans: This is still one of our struggles but we do notice that when we post more often we get more followers. We have the strategy of making sure we post everyday and engage with our followers. The more content the more willing people are willing to keep following us.
Q: Where do you see yourselves and bk fashion mavens in the next 5 years?
Ans: We see ourselves working our way to being macro influencers having consistent collaborations with fashion/lifestyle brands or magazines. We want our blog and YouTube channel to also be top platforms where we have a big impact of the nyc blogger community and people get to learn more about Brooklyn.
Q: What’s the best advice you ladies have ever received and the best advice you have to give?
Keep a list of all your contacts. And reach out to brands that you would like to work with.
